Transforming Treatment: Gender-Informed Care and Eating Disorders

This presentation is designed to increase awareness to treating eating disorders within the LGBTQ population. With the emergence of new research that has indicated that 71% of transgender respondents age 13-24 were diagnosed with an eating disorder and 54% of those who identified as LGBTQ were diagnosed with an eating disorder, we are increasingly of the unique challenges of awareness and treatment within the LGBTQ community. Participants will hear from a clinical advocate as well as dynamic speaker, Schuyler Bailar, on his journey through recovery from an eating disorder and his transition as the first openly transgender collegiate swimmer in US history. Schuyler Bailar is the first transgender NCAA D1 Men’s athlete and Monte Nido & Affiliates Fellow. Schuyler has a shared history with our organization, having attended Oliver-Pyatt Centers where he was first able to discuss his gender identity aloud. During this time period, Mr. Bailar also attended gender workshops at the YES! Institute in Miami, Florida, which allowed him to better understand his gender. Soon after, Mr. Bailar began his transition. Now a college graduate and influential speaker and advocate, Mr. Bailar will work closely with the team at Monte Nido & Affiliates to continue teaching and guiding others on gender-inclusive care, particularly in the context of eating disorder treatment.

Melissa Orshan Spann, PhD, LMHC, CEDS-S, RTY-200 is a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist and Supervisor. Dr. Spann is currently the Chief Clinical Officer at Monte Nido and Affiliates where she oversees the clinical operations and programming for Monte Nido, Clementine, and Oliver-Pyatt Centers. Prior to serving as the CCO, Dr. Spann was the Vice President of Admissions for MNA. Dr. Spann is an accomplished presenter who presents nationally on topics related to body image development, eating disorders in the Jewish community and the intersection of trauma and eating disorders. Dr. Spann is a passionate clinician who has spent her career working in eating disorder higher level of care. She is a member of the Academy for Eating Disorders, the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals as well as serving on iaedp Certification Committee, and serves on the South-East Eating Disorder Conference committee. She received her Doctoral degree from Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA, Master's degree from the University of Miami, and a Bachelor's degree from the University of Florida.
