Transforming Treatment: Gender-Informed Care and Eating Disorders
This presentation is designed to increase awareness to treating eating disorders within the LGBTQ population. With the emergence of new research that has indicated that 71% of transgender respondents age 13-24 were diagnosed with an eating disorder and 54% of those who identified as LGBTQ were diagnosed with an eating disorder, we are increasingly of the unique challenges of awareness and treatment within the LGBTQ community. Through an implicit bias lens, participants will self-reflect on our own privilege and bias to understand how this influences our work. Participants will hear from a clinical advocate as well as dynamic speaker, Schuyler Bailar, on his journey through recovery from an eating disorder and his transition as the first openly transgender collegiate swimmer in US history.
